The suspect had weapons, body armor items and lots of bomb-making substances at home.
Dwayne A. Vandergrift was arrested by federal agents and charged with detonating an explosive device near a gym in Gloucester, New Jersey that is known to be popular among LGBTQ people.
According to U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito, “substantial quantities of bomb-making materials, numerous weapons, including an unregistered short-barreled rifle, several tactical vests outfitted with body armor and loaded 30-round ammunition magazines, and a marijuana grow operation containing approximately 85 marijuana plants” were found by federal agents when executing a search warrant at the suspect’s home.
Visual surveillance equipment filmed Vandergrift placing the self-made explosive device opposite to G-City Crossfit gym building near 4 AM and fleeing after. The glass front door of the gym was shattered by the detonation.
Carpentino added that the browsing history of the suspect revealed him to have been researching ways to craft, construct and use different explosives, including pressure cookers and pipe bombs.
For now, the motive for the crime has not yet been revealed. Still, many of the locals assume it to be the presence of a pride flag hung in front of the building.
